Avalon

Avalon's Story

Actually three kingdoms -- Avalon, Inismore, and the Highland Marches, Avalon was invaded by Montaigne in 1066, and only threw off its rule about ten years ago when Queen Elaine united the three kingdoms.

In 1658, Elaine announced that any man sailing under the Avalonian banner would be called "noble sailor", equivalent to a knight, and they would own a percentage of the plunder taken while under the Avalon flag, no matter how that plunder was acquired. A year later, the King of Castille built an armada to crush Avalon. It was smashed by Avalon's tiny navy through a series of incredible events, propelling Avalon into world politic.

It is a place of mystery and fantastic reality. The sidhe ("shee"), an ancient and powerful race have recently returned to Avalon's shores. They have been described as: "As terrible and blameless as a thunderstorm."

Notable People

Queen Elaine: According to legend, all the country's streams, swamps, and rivers are guarded by a figure known as the Lady of the Lake. It was taught that the Avalons and the Lady had made a sacred vow long before that was symbolized by a cup called "the graal." The true king would keep the waters pure, and a kind of spell fell over Avalon that as long as the promise was maintained, Avalon would be a place of magic and wonder. Unfortunately, the promise was broken, and not long after, Montaigne invaded.

When Elaine came out of the mists and claimed to be the descendant of the king who first held the graal, bearing the graal in her hands as proof of her legitimacy, Avalon's enchantment returned. She has reinstated the ancient order of knights that once protected the High King, led by Sir Lawrence Lugh.

Derwyddon (dair-ooee-then): Queen Elaine's primary advisor, he is an old man who is supposed to be able to see both into the future and the past.

The O'Bannon: King of Inismore has hundreds of songs chronicling his adventures and misadventures. He is reputed to be over a thousand years old. A "Mad King O'Bannon" has appeared numerous times before in Inish history, always appearing exactly as he did before, and disappearing as he did before.

James MacDuff II: King of the Highland Marches, elected by the Highland Clans to represent them as their High King, his support gave Queen Elaine the legitimacy she needed to hold the throne.
